The Dignity of Trying: Living Your Values in Difficult Times

I won’t pretend that terrible things aren’t happening. Some problems are so large that they make us feel powerless. They are outside our control, and the chronic stress of the situation builds the more exposed we become.

But there is always something within our control. We can live our values and influence outcomes in our networks and communities, no matter our circumstances.

We can choose kindness when cruelty looms over us. We can donate, volunteer, vote, encourage, advocate, create, listen, or simply refuse to let cynicism have the final word. These actions may seem small, but lasting individual and cultural change happens when ordinary people do ordinary things consistently.

When we try.

When did we forget the dignity of trying?

Have you ever had a rock in your shoe? Of course you have, and it was irritating enough to remember the sensation despite its size. Have you ever found yourself in an endless line? I just got back from the airport, and I can attest that a long line changes your view of what’s possible for the rest of the day.

Your actions influence outcomes. Research shows that acts of courage, generosity, and kindness observed by others are contagious. The ripples you create can become the waves that overwhelm harmful systems and strengthen healthy ones.

Your efforts will not solve every problem. They don’t have to.

Living according to your values is never wasted, even when the results aren’t immediate or obvious. Every encouraging word, every act of service, every time you choose hope over helplessness matters. You are helping shape the world.

I appreciate all the good you do, and it all matters.
