Trying a new game or puzzle stretches your brain in healthy ways. Novel challenges encourage cognitive strength and flexibility. At the same time, returning to familiar games you already enjoy gives your mind a break from the demands of everyday life, helping reduce stress and anxiety.

In my practice, I often encourage people to make room for small, restorative activities that aren’t productive in the traditional sense. A few quiet minutes with a puzzle or activity book are a radical act of self-care in a productivity-obsessed world. It is an investment in yourself, honoring your need for active rest.

It’s straightforward but not easy! Thoughts of guilt may arise as you choose yourself, but the world will not stop turning while you take a break.

Try it this week and see how it feels.
